ABOUT THE ARTIST
My goal as a craftsman is to design and build functional pieces that double as objects of art. Taking an eclectic approach to woodworking, I am comfortable with both traditional and contemporary styles for my boxes. The beauty and character inherent in each board or burl inspire me. With almost forty years of experience, I can honestly say that the wood talks to me and guides my creativity. As a result, there is something unique about every single piece I make and, to me, each is always one-of-a-kind.
Over the years I have realized that special dream of working at something I truly love. And, as if that isn’t enough, I am honored by the fact that others appreciate what I do as well. The NICHE Award (for outstanding creative achievement in American craft) came my way four times. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts and The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation each granted me fellowships to take my craft to new levels. Two museums from my home state of New Jersey chose my pieces for their permanent collections, as did the World Headquarters of Johnson & Johnson, Inc. and Bvlgari. Over the years I have been invited to exhibit at the Philadelpia Museum of Art Craft Show and at the Smithsonian Craft Show. In addition, my work continues to earn awards of excellence* annually. Of equal importance to me, however, are the long-standing relationships I have developed with customers who know my work from craft shows, galleries, and shops across the country. Although I continue to make some of your favorite objects, I am always challenging myself to come up with interesting new ideas to invigorate my inventory.
Please feel free to browse this website and contact me for more information. Perhaps we can meet in person soon at a craft show in your area.

Steve Levine
